External wall insulation: everything you need to know

As the weather continues to fluctuate and energy costs increase, people across the nation are seeing the importance of investing in home insulation. External wall insulation is a popular solution that can transform the comfort and energy efficiency of your home.

At INSUL8, we take great pride in being experts in home insulation, read on to discover everything you need to know.

What is external wall insulation?

It is the process of applying a layer of insulation to the outer walls of a property before it is rendered. The new layer of insulation prevents heat loss and reduces the amount of energy required to heat the property.

The installation process

Typically, our process is as follows:

Preparations
Before we insulate the walls, we ensure the area is clean and free from any damage, adjusting pipework when required. We also adjust any other wall furniture as required, such as aerials and boiler flues, so that you don’t have to.

Insulation
A layer of insulation is adhesively and mechanically fixed to the exterior walls. This is typically either expanded polystyrene (EPS), rock wool or wood fibre.

Rendering
Once insulated, the property will be rendered. This is embedded with a mesh that provides strength and flexibility, seals the insulation and minimises gaps. We apply a silicone topcoat as a decorative finish.

Final checks and completion
We will do final checks to ensure the insulation is completely water-tight.

  • Improved energy efficiency, resulting in lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint
  • Better temperature control: the property will be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter
  • An improved appearance of the property
  • It doesn’t reduce the internal square footage of a property
  • The additional layer of insulation will improve soundproofing
  • Increased property value, thanks to the visual appeal and energy efficiency.
